Investigation of the Kollicoat Smartseal formulation concepts on the taste masking functionality

Did you know that based on the virtual tool BitterPredict, about 40% of random molecules, 66% of clinical and experimental drugs, and almost 77% of natural products are bitter1?

This leads us to concern about the final formulation’s palatability and look for alternatives to overcome the undesirable drug taste issue to improve patient compliance and convenience when developing solutions, suspensions, or solid dosages that dissolve within the oral cavity.

Kollicoat® Smartseal is a reverse-enteric polymer designed for such taste-masking applications. In the saliva pH, the polymer is insoluble, ensuring an effective taste masking. It dissolves readily at a pH below 5.5 (stomach), allowing for a drug’s immediate release.

Our Whitepaper shows you how to formulate Kollicoat® Smartseal using three distinctly different strategies and coating in a GEA ConsiGma® coater2.
