Lactohale® inhalation blend products refer to a selective range of products found to be ideal to create your optimal particle size distribution. The properties of inhalation grade lactose are typically chosen based on different parameters, like the required flow in the device, the required flow for the filling platform, and the required drug deposition. A comprehensive range of standard Lactohale® grades is available to cover the versatile customer needs.

The Lactohale® product range of Lactohale® 206, Lactohale® 210, Lactohale® 220, Lactohale® 230 and Lactohale® 300 is specifically of interest for formulators who are in early stage of development or for those who want to explore the design space of their formulation.

Quality by Design approach to Dry Powder Inhalation formulation

Lactohale® 206 is a coarse milled alpha lactose monohydrate grade where the fine lactose particles have been removed. The coarse milled lactose grade could be used as a basic lactose grade in applications where a good flow is required. Mixing this coarse grade with fine lactose provides formulators a means to optimize flow and deposition of a Dry Powder Inhalation blend. Different types of fines are available for this optimization, being Lactohale® 210, Lactohale® 220, Lactohale® 230 and Lactohale® 300. Blending with very fine lactose grades typically has a significant impact on the drug deposition. Adding slightly coarser fines, like Lactohale® 210, mainly has an impact on the powder cohesiveness, with limited impact on deposition.

At DFE Pharma a wide range of milled and sieved inhalation lactose grades are available referred to as Lactohale® and Respitose®. Customers typically start their development with Lactohale® DoE products, and they can convert to customization to fine-tune the performance of their formulation. In close collaboration, the flow properties can be matched to the correct fines content for an optimal product performance. The resulting Customized Lactohale® grade with their specific particle size profiles is unique for each customer.
