Description

Type-Sodium alginate

Viscosity, mPa.s (% concentration)- 300-700 (10%)

Alginates are natural hydrocolloids of vegetable origin that occur as a structural component in marine brown algae and give strength and flexibility to the plant.

Sodium alginate consists mainly of the sodium salt of alginic acid, which is a mixture of polyuronic acids [(C6H8O6)x] composed of units of D-mannuronic acid and L-guluronic acid.

Sodium alginate is obtained mainly from brown seaweed. It is used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by creating a strong raft (physical barrier to prevent stomach acid from entering in the oesophagus).
