High Temperature GranuPack – See the newest development from Granutools

Numerous industrial processes involve powder heating which leads to major modification of the powder packing properties. For example, the setting of solid bridges due to pre-sintering will have drastic consequences on the packing behavior of the powder. Even at a lower temperature far from the melting point, slight changes in the surface state of the particles will modify the contact interactions and thus the ability of the grains to reorganize during packing.

Knowledge of the packing behavior in the processing condition is a requirement to predict the performance of the powder and optimize the processability!

The influence of temperature on the packing dynamics can now be investigated thanks to the new GranuPack High-Temperature instrument, combining all the advantages of the GranuPack while adding the ability to heat the powder during the measurement.

Temperature influences drastically the physical properties of polymer powders. In the present study, the packing dynamics of polymer powders has been investigated with a modified version of GranuPack instrument, which is an improvement of the classical tapped density measurement.

After the filling procedure, the sample is heated and the evolution of the density is measured after each tap. For a selection of four polymers (polyamide 12, Polystyrene, Polyvinyl chloride and a thermoplastic polyurethane), the influence of temperature on the Hausner ratio and on the packing dynamics are analysed. We show that the packing dynamics is drastically influenced by temperature even far below the melting temperature Tm for semi-crystalline polymers and far below the glass-transition temperatures Tg for amorphous polymers.

In addition, we show that the analysis of the packing dynamics at different temperatures allows to determine a characteristic temperature corresponding to the onset of caking. Finally, we show that this temperature is coherent with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis.
