Call for papers – Excipients: new opportunities for complex challenges

Innovative drug formulations rely not only on active ingredients, but also on excipients. These vital substances enhance drug stability, delivery, and effectiveness, ensuring medications perform as intended and improve patient outcomes.
We are happy to announce that Sharareh Salar-Behzadi, Karsten Mäder and Michael Herbig are guest editors in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics Special Issue: 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴: 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴.
If you’d like to be part of this special issue, submit your manuscript by February 28, 2025, and choose the article type ‘VSI: Excipients.’

EJPB Special Issue
Excipients are not just “inert materials” which are added to a drug molecule to manufacture a drug product. They are key ingredients which can impact on efficacy and safety of medicines with stability consequences, and show complexity due to their often-multicomponent composition and their multifaceted physical and biological interactions. After many years of few changes we face a time with a rapid development of new excipients which should combine a better functionality with a green footprint along with significant new insights into important existing excipients. The special issue will highlight current developments with the reflection of environmental and economic aspects, the conflict between innovation and regulatory constraints, safety and analytical challenges as well as new opportunities.
