BASF Pharma introduces Kollipro™ Urea Granules

BASF´s first product for downstream joined their biopharma portfolio!

In  September 2024, BASF Pharma Solutions team officially announced the launch of their brand new product Kollipro™ Urea Granules for downstream bioprocessing. The GMP-compendial Kollipro™ Urea Granules show enhanced flowability and minimized agglomeration, and reduced preparation and handling time. BASF claims that one can elevate the  biopharmaceutical production with Kollipro™ Urea Granules as innovative, high-performance ingredients.

The details:

BASF’s Kollipro™ Urea Granules is a compendial GMP offering for downstream purification for use in inclusion body solubilization and column chromatography. The product is characterized as white to off-white granules.

1. Benefits

  • The granules allow for improved flowability, resulting in reduced agglomeration and decreased preparation and handling time, minimizing the need to fragment large aggregates.
  • The GMP product meets compendial requirements and is tested for microbial and endotoxins.
  • Kollipro™ Urea Granules is offered in a fit-for-purpose 25 kg plastic box with double plastic liners.
  • The product is backed by BASF’s strong supply reliability as a large-scale manufacturer of urea.

4. Handling instructions

Kollipro™ Urea Granules are white to almost white granules. The product is slightly hygroscopic, especially at high relative humidities above 78 %. The irregular shape of the granules prevents intense agglomeration of the product.

However, the product may form aggregates while in storage. Those aggregates can typically be broken up easily by mechanical means. Kollipro™ Urea Granules are soluble in water and a number of organic solvents, e.g., ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and methanol.

Dissolution of Kollipro™ Urea Granules in water consumes heat (about 257 kJ/kg), causing the solution to cool and thus delaying dissolution. Using lukewarm water can help to ensure the KolliproTM Urea Granules dissolve without delay.

5. Stability and Safety

The product is typically stable for 24 months after date of production provided the product is stored under recommended conditions. The actual retest period and storage conditions can be found in the document “Quality & Regulatory Product Summary” in RegXcellence®. The safety data sheet is accessible via MyProductWorld and is sent with every consignment.
