Join us for an inspiring Masterclass in Nanomedicine featuring two leading experts in the field.

Prof. Olivia Merkel (LMU Munich) will explore “From Molecular Dynamics to Materials: AI-Guided RNA Excipients”, highlighting how artificial intelligence is transforming RNA formulation design.

Prof. Paola Luciani (University Bern) will then present “Injectable Liposomal Depots: A Bottom-Up Journey from In Silico to In Vivo”, offering insights into innovative delivery systems from computational modeling to preclinical studies.

Each presentation will last 30 minutes, followed by a dedicated Q&A session directly after each talk, giving participants the opportunity to engage with the speakers and discuss their latest research.

Prof. Olivia Merkel

Olivia Merkel has been a Professor of Drug Delivery at LMU Munich since 2015, Chair since 2022, and Co-Director of the Department of Pharmacy since 2024. She is a Registered Pharmacist, received a MS (2006) and a PhD (2009) in Pharmaceutical Technology as well as numerous awards, including an ERC Starting Grant, ERC Proof-of-Concept Grant, and ERC Consolidator Grant, the APV Research Award and the Carl-Wilhelm-Scheele-Award.

Merkel is the co-spokesperson for the BMBF Future Cluster CNAT-M and an author of over 150 articles and book chapters. She served as NIH reviewer from 2014-2015, SNSF reviewer from 2018-2022, is an Editorial Board member for JCR, EJPB, Molecular Pharmaceutics and other journals, Associate Editor for DDTR and WIREs Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology, was the President of the German Controlled Release Society in 2020 and the Chair of the CRS Focus Group on Transdermal and Mucosal Delivery from 2020-2022, and currently is a scientific advisory board member of Coriolis Pharma, AMW, and Corden Pharma as well as a co-founder of RNhale.

Her research focuses mainly on RNA formulation and pulmonary delivery for the treatment of a variety of lung diseases.

Prof. Paola Luciani

Prof., University Bern

Paola Luciani has been a Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Bern since 2019 and has served as Director of Studies for the Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences since 2020. Prof. Luciani is the current President of the Controlled Release Society DeChAt Local Chapter (Germany/Switzerland/Austria) and Vice President Science of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

She acts as external Specialist for Pharmaceutical Quality for Swissmedic and as Expert in the NANO (Nanomedicine) Working Group of the European Pharmacopoeia. Additionally, she has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Phospholipid Research Center since 2019. In 2024, she co-founded the Center of Extracellular Research (EVR) at the University of Bern.

Her scientific contributions have earned her various recognitions, including being named Emerging Investigator in 2017 by the Royal Society of Chemistry and receiving the Breaking Barriers Breakthrough Award from the Controlled Release Society’s Skin and Mucosal Delivery Focus Group.

Her research centers on the design and characterization of lipid-based delivery systems for drug delivery and diagnostics, with a focus on treatments for fibrotic and inflammatory diseases.
