The use of bioresorbable polymers by Ashland as alternatives to permanent, non-degradable materials in biomedical applications offers various benefits including; removing the need for surgical removal, reducing interventions and clinic visits, reduced long-term foreign body response, allowing personalized/targeted therapies including local drug release and flexibility to solve many complex device-specific challenges.
Viatel™ bioresorbable polymers are increasingly used in dental and orthopedic implants, tissue engineering scaffolds, wound healing and fixation devices. They have also become a pillar of the aesthetic medicine industry, particularly in dermal fillers, where they enhance skin volume and texture by filling wrinkles and stimulating collagen production.
“The expansion of our bioresorbable polymer portfolio with additional high molecular weight grades demonstrates our continuing commitment to support our global customers and partner needs,” said Robert Lumsden, global business manager, injectables, life sciences, Ashland. “Providing high-quality materials coupled with superior customer and technical service continues to position Ashland as an industry leader in the pharmaceutical and medical materials space.”
The viatel™ polymer platform is an important element of Ashland’s innovation strategy, which includes a commitment to expanding R&D and manufacturing capacity as well as extending the viatel™ polymer line with key value-adds, such as high molecular weight formulations. This grade expansion follows a $15 million investment at the Mullingar Ireland site in 2024 and is part of a larger strategy to expand our solutions offering in this space.
Ashland offers customization of viatel™ polymer products, tailoring them to meet delivery, processing, stability, or release profile needs of drug formulation and device strategies. The products are designed for use in multiple market segments and potential applications including long acting injectables for chronic disease and animal health; advanced drug delivery for improved mRNA delivery; and medical devices, regenerative medicine, dermal fillers, and more.
